Copilot or Claude? For many Australian SMBs, that is the wrong question.

The two platforms are often presented as competitors, with comparison pages promising to reveal which AI tool comes out on top. But those comparisons rarely tell the full story, particularly when they are written by one of the vendors involved.

Microsoft 365 Copilot now provides access to Claude models within selected experiences, while standalone Claude can connect with Microsoft 365. The two products are not identical, but they increasingly overlap.

The better question is: what are your business’s bottlenecks, and which platform is best placed to help address them?

Before choosing another AI tool for your Australian business, here is what to check.

What is Microsoft 365 Copilot and How Does It Work?

Microsoft 365 Copilot is Microsoft’s AI assistant for work, embedded across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams. It helps employees’ draft content, summarise meetings, analyse information and find answers within the applications they already use.

What sets Copilot apart is its access to business context. Through Work IQ, it can draw on relevant emails, meetings, documents and conversations while respecting existing Microsoft 365 permissions. This allows Copilot to respond based on your organisation’s information, not just the prompt it receives.

Microsoft now also offer Copilot Cowork, an agentic capability available to Microsoft 365 Copilot users. It can plan and complete longer, multi-step tasks across applications and information sources, with usage billed separately through Copilot Credits.

Depending on your licence, region and administrator settings, selected Claude models may be available across Copilot Chat, Researcher, Copilot Studio and supported Microsoft 365 applications.

Microsoft 365 Copilot supports AI models from providers including OpenAI and Anthropic, giving eligible users more choice within the Copilot experience. That means your Copilot licence may already provide some of the Claude capabilities your team needs, without requiring a separate Claude subscription. It does not, however, include the complete standalone Claude product.

What Is Claude and How Does It Work?

Claude is Anthropic’s AI assistant, available through its own web, desktop and mobile experiences. It helps users research topics, analyse information, create content and work through complex problems.

Anthropic offers Free, Pro and Max plans for individuals, alongside Team and Enterprise subscriptions with additional collaboration, administration and security controls for businesses.

Its agentic capability, Claude Cowork, extends the platform beyond individual prompts. It can plan and complete longer, multi-step tasks, create documents, presentations and spreadsheets, and continue working in the cloud while the user reviews or redirects its progress.

Although Claude is primarily a standalone platform, it is possible to integrate it with Microsoft 365 so employees can work with Claude directly in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. With administrator approval, a separate connector can also allow Claude to search relevant information across SharePoint, OneDrive, Outlook and Teams and take permitted actions.

This setup does not make Claude part of Microsoft 365 Copilot. It remains a separate Anthropic product with its own licensing, administration and data-handling arrangements.

Copilot vs Claude for Business: What Are the Key Differences?

Although Copilot and Claude can now work across some of the same applications and even use the same underlying models, they are not interchangeable. The key differences are how they integrate with your business, how they are governed and how they are licensed.

Model Choice

Microsoft 365 Copilot is a multi-model platform, giving eligible users access to models from providers including OpenAI and Anthropic. Standalone Claude is Anthropic’s own platform and provides its complete product experience.

Using a Claude model within Copilot does not give employees access to every feature available through Claude Team or Enterprise.

Microsoft 365 Integration

Copilot is built into Microsoft 365 and uses Work IQ to draw context from the emails, meetings, files and conversations a user is permitted to access.

Claude can be integrated with Microsoft 365, but this requires separate integrations, connector permissions and administration. It does not become part of the native Copilot experience.

Governance and Compliance

When a user selects Claude within Copilot, they remain in the Microsoft 365 environment. Existing identities, permissions and applicable compliance controls continue to govern access, with Anthropic acting as a Microsoft subprocessor.

Standalone Claude is governed separately. Even when connected to Microsoft 365, businesses must independently review its user access, permissions and data-handling arrangements

Licensing

Microsoft 365 Copilot is generally licensed per user through an eligible Microsoft 365 plan or bundle. Agentic capabilities such as Copilot Cowork may incur additional usage-based charges through Copilot Credits.

Standalone Claude is licensed separately. Team plans are priced per seat with usage limits, while additional usage and some Enterprise plans can incur consumption charges based on model and token use.

Which AI Tool Should Your Business Use?

There is no universal answer. Start by identifying the bottlenecks holding your business back, then consider these four questions to determine whether Copilot, Claude, both or neither can address them.

1. How and Where Will Your Team Use AI?

Think about how employees would use AI during a typical working week and which applications are involved. Copilot may feel more natural for work centred on emails, meetings, documents and spreadsheets within Microsoft 365. Claude may be more helpful for in-depth research, long-document analysis, coding or tasks that draw on a broader mix of tools and information sources.

2. What Capabilities Are You Already Paying For?

Before buying another subscription, take stock of the AI tools already in use. This includes company licences, individual accounts and any free tools employees have adopted independently.

A quick audit can help you understand your current AI tool stack and uncover duplicate costs, underused licences and unmanaged access.

3. What Information Will the Tool Access?

Consider both the information employees enter and the systems the AI tool can access. Customer data, financial records and confidential documents may require stronger controls than general business content.

Confirm how each platform manages permissions, data processing and compliance so access remains appropriate for your organisation.

4. Who Needs Which Capabilities?

Not every employee needs the same AI platform or licence. Access should reflect each person’s role, workflows and the information they handle.

Start with a small group of suitable users and monitor usage, time saved and output quality. This can help you decide where Copilot, Claude or both deliver enough value to justify a wider rollout.

FAQs

Does Microsoft 365 Copilot Use Claude?
Yes, within selected Copilot experiences. Eligible users can choose Anthropic Claude models in Copilot Chat, Researcher, Copilot Studio and supported Microsoft 365 applications. Availability depends on your licence, region and administrator settings. This does not provide access to the complete standalone Claude product.

Does Microsoft 365 Copilot Include Claude?
Partly, but not as a standalone subscription. Eligible Copilot users may have access to selected Claude models within supported Microsoft experiences. This does not include every feature, integration or administrative control available through Claude Team or Enterprise, so check your current licensing before purchasing both.

Should My Business Choose Copilot or Standalone Claude?
It depends on how your team works. Copilot may suit workflows centred on Microsoft 365, while standalone Claude may be useful for research, long-document analysis, coding or work across different tools. Compare your use cases, existing licences and governance requirements before deciding.

Is Claude Enterprise as Secure as Microsoft 365 Copilot?
Both can support secure business use, but they are governed differently. Copilot uses Microsoft 365 identities, permissions and applicable compliance controls. Claude Enterprise uses Anthropic’s own security, administration and data-handling arrangements. Assess each platform against the information your business handles and its compliance obligations.

Does My Business Need to Pay for Both Copilot and Claude?
Not necessarily. Your Copilot licence may already provide the Claude-powered capabilities employees need for some tasks. Standalone Claude may only be worthwhile where its broader product experience fills a genuine gap. Review current access, actual usage and role-specific requirements before adding licences across the business.
