Also known as email fraud, email phishing is when cyber criminals send an email or a text message to someone pretending to be a legitimate company designed to trick you into giving up confidential data. In these emails, they might include a link that will redirect you to an online form, that will ask for sensitive information. Once you have provided this information, they can access your bank accounts, online accounts and other personal information at the drop of a hat. With the technological age, cyber criminals are utilising this form of fraud to attack vulnerable people, so it’s important you know what to look out for.

How do you recognise when you are being ‘phished’?

When an email comes through that seems legitimate, take a look at the email address it has come from. Often, it will be a random set of numbers, someones’ name or a clearly counterfeit address. Once you have checked this, send the email straight to junk or delete the text message straight away. Another way of noticing email fraud is through seeing if there are any spelling mistakes and the name that they call you on the email. For example, if it begins ‘Dear (then your email address, or the start of your email address for example), it will not be legitimate.

There are many risks associated with email phishing. As well as being able to access bank account information, cyber criminals may also be able to access information about your business, health and personal data as well as causing a virus – causing catastrophic damage in the long term.

What can be done to protect your company or yourself from email phishing?

The first step should be to make sure that you have cyber protection in place, to ensure that your business is guarded. Cyber security products such as Barracuda Sentinel (which Ever Nimble uses), guarantees that your business is protected, through preventing email phishing by detecting attacks through an A.I system. Highlighting any anomalies, they will automatically flag any emails that seem to be illegitimate (such as employee impersonation), can lock attackers out of accounts, detect suspicious links and more. Integrating directly with Microsoft Office 365, it will also protect your business from account takeover.

Another helpful feature of the Barracuda Sentinel system is that it sends reports showing when the business has been targeted through a clever tool called DMARC (Domain Message Authentication Reporting and Conformance), showing emails that have been blocked and other such cyber attacks that have been prevented.

It’s important to keep yourself and your company safe in the modern age. People often do not realise how easy it is for criminals to get access to sensitive and personal information, therefore it’s key to have protection in place in case it happens. Our business focuses on protecting you and ensuring that your business is kept safe from any potential cyber threats. By using an A.I system that destroys the attack before it occurs, you can focus on what’s important without the worry of any cyber attacks occurring.
