Also known as email fraud, email phishing is when cyber criminals send an email or a text message to someone pretending to be a legitimate company designed to trick you into giving up confidential data. How do you recognise when you are being ‘phished’?
When an email comes through that seems legitimate, take a look at the email address it has come from. Often, it will be a random set of numbers, someones’ name or a clearly counterfeit address. Once you have checked this, send the email straight to junk or delete the text message straight away. Another way of noticing email fraud is through seeing if there are any spelling mistakes and the name that they call you on the email. For example, if it begins ‘Dear (then your email address, or the start of your email address for example), it will not be legitimate.
